Verse, chorus and bridge

Open the interactive module

Form and flow

Verse, chorus and bridge describe common section roles. Verses may advance the narrative, choruses return a recognisable central idea, and a bridge can introduce contrast. They are useful descriptions rather than compulsory labels for every song.

Create sectional contrast through register, density, rhythm and timbre as well as level. A chorus need not always be busier; a reduction can also be effective. Ask what each section contributes instead of merely attaching names to successive blocks.

Example

An original outline: intro–verse–chorus–verse–chorus–bridge–chorus; not the only valid order.
