Similarity and contrast in AABA

Open the interactive module

Form and flow

In AABA, an A idea appears twice, B supplies contrast, and a final A returns to familiar material. Letters identify sections rather than individual notes. Matching letters allow variation in text, ornamentation or endings.

Identify what makes A recognisable and what B changes: harmony, register or rhythmic activity may provide the contrast. The return gains meaning through what intervened. Eight-bar sections and a thirty-two-bar total are familiar possibilities, not requirements of every use of the scheme.

Example

Try contrasting your own eight-bar A idea with B, then listen to the return.
