Usul, meter and asymmetric grouping

Understanding usul

Usul concerns an organised rhythmic cycle with relationships between strokes and accents. A time signature alone does not describe its complete character.

As a counting exercise, group nine equal eighth-note units as 2+2+2+3 and then 2+3+2+2. This does not assign a historical usul name to either pattern; named cycles require contextual study.

Example

Mark group boundaries across nine boxes, then move the boundaries and compare accent positions.
