Meter and grouping
Asymmetric grouping organises equal small units into unequal larger groups. Seven eighths can form 2+2+3, 2+3+2 or 3+2+2. Moving the three-unit group changes the gait even though the total duration stays the same.
Mark group beginnings lightly, then compare them with the actual beaming and accents. Nine eighths can form three equal groups or an asymmetric arrangement. A meter fraction alone does not identify a Turkish usul, regional dance or complete performance style.
Example
2+2+2+3 totals nine eighths, with a longer final group.
