Pulse and subdivision
Subdivision splits a beat into smaller equal parts. With a quarter-note beat, two eighths give a two-part division and four sixteenths a four-part division. The silent positions matter as much as the attacks.
Count the complete subdivision, then play only the required events. A subdivision is a reference grid, not an instruction to fill every slot. Once that reference is secure, swing and other timing choices can be explored intentionally rather than emerging from uncertain counting.
Example
In “1 and 2 and”, the “ands” mark eighth-note positions between quarter beats.
