Pulse and rhythm are different

Pulse and subdivision

Pulse is the regular time reference listeners can follow; rhythm is the pattern of attacks and durations around it. A melody can place several events between beats without changing the underlying count. Not every note attack is a new beat.

For music with a clear pulse, first establish the count and then locate the phrase against it. Tapping steady beats while clapping the rhythm helps separate the layers. Some traditions or passages use freer time, so this method should not force every performance into rigid metronomic regularity.

Example

Your foot can mark four beats while your hands clap eight evenly spaced attacks.
