Note and channel data
MIDI 1.0 represents a note’s start and release as separate events. Note On carries a note number and attack velocity; Note Off releases the note. Audible sound may continue because of the patch’s release or sustain pedal.
A Note On with zero velocity also serves as a note release. Therefore not every message named Note On should be counted as a fresh attack. When diagnosing a hanging note, inspect the release event, its channel and pedal state rather than assuming note length alone controls the whole sound.
Example
A C started on channel 1 needs the corresponding release addressed to its channel and note number.
