Why MIDI is not an audio recording

Open the interactive module

Note and channel data

MIDI stores performance instructions and events; an audio file stores sampled sound. The same MIDI can therefore sound different through different instruments.

Check data transfer separately from sound quality. Share MIDI when the recipient needs to edit notes; share a rendered audio file when the intended sound matters.

Example

Use MIDI to exchange editable notes and WAV to share a particular piano rendering.
