Scale families and changes

Organising a major-scale collection around another centre gives a useful introductory model for diatonic modes. The white keys centred on D model D Dorian, but simply running from D to D does not guarantee a D-centred musical passage.

Study the centre, characteristic intervals and accompaniment together. D Dorian has B natural where D natural minor has B-flat. Modal terminology is not a direct translation of makam: melodic development and intonation may follow different systems. Move from scale lists to short phrases that establish their centre.

Example

D Dorian: D–E–F–G–A–B–C, with a natural sixth.
