The second pair reuses the preceding 0x90 status. Treating each pair as a fresh status breaks parsing.
Running status · 90 3C 64 40 64 → C4 + E4
Bytes in the example are hexadecimal. In channel messages the first byte identifies the type and channel. Subsequent data bytes carry parameters. System messages use other layouts.
