An introduction to the Hicaz family

Makam studies

Hicaz can name a pitch as well as a makam; keep those uses separate. Hicaz makam belongs to a related family. In Özkan’s introductory account its final is dügâh and güçlü is nevâ. Shared family features do not make every member melodically identical.

Do not identify an entire makam from one striking interval alone. Cadential behaviour and development matter too. An approximate colour on an equal-tempered keyboard does not reproduce all traditional intonation. Distinguish family name, specific makam and pitch label in your notes.

Example

Supplement a “Hicaz-like” listening impression with observations about final and intermediate repose.
