Same note, different timbre

Properties of sound

A piano and a bağlama can play the same pitch while remaining recognisable. Timbre depends partly on the distribution of components and how they evolve. The initial strike, scrape or breath can be especially revealing.

Separating two parts does not always require making one louder. Their attacks, registers and density can help distinguish them. A static spectrum is therefore an incomplete description: the way a sound begins and fades also shapes its musical identity.

Example

Imagine one phrase on piano and sustained strings: the notes match, but the phrase feels different.
