Reading the staff
The staff has five lines and four spaces. Moving from a line to its adjacent space changes one letter-name step. Count lines from the bottom, but use the clef to establish their pitches.
Ledger lines extend the same sequence beyond the staff; they do not create a separate system. Reading the movement between neighbouring positions can be more useful than memorising isolated note pictures. For passages far outside the staff, clef choice and octave markings also affect readability.
Example
In treble clef, the bottom line is E and the space above it is F.
