Rests are part of musical time

Open the interactive module

Durations and signs

A rest reserves a duration without a new written note in that part. It does not stop the meter: other parts and the internal pulse continue. A quarter rest and a quarter note occupy equal time in the same context.

Read rests as part of phrasing and space, not as disposable gaps. A short silence can emphasise the next entrance or make room for a soloist. Reverb or a pedal tail may remain audible during a written rest without implying another note attack.

Example

Two quarter notes and two quarter rests fill one bar of 4/4.
