Range and practical register

Pitch and register

Range spans the lowest and highest notes of a part. Practical register concerns where a particular player or instrument can sustain the desired sound comfortably. A note being technically possible does not make an entire phrase in that region equally practical.

Check where most of the phrase lies, not only its extremes. Persistent writing at an edge can affect stamina, breathing and tone. Ask about the actual performer, instrument and tempo rather than assuming one universal limit from an instrument name.

Example

Two melodies can share a highest note while visiting it once versus every bar.

Can the highest note alone tell us how difficult a phrase is?

AnswerNo: duration, repetition, tempo and the performer also matter.
