Durations and signs
A pickup is an incomplete opening measure that leads toward the first full downbeat. Count the missing beats silently so that the phrase arrives naturally.
Count a complete preparation bar before entering. Some scores balance the pickup with a shortened final bar, but inspect the actual notation rather than assuming that convention.
Example
In 4/4, a quarter note on beat four can lead to beat one.
