Reading the staff

A fermata permits a note or rest to be held beyond its written duration. The symbol does not specify a fixed number of seconds; style and coordination shape the length.

In ensemble rehearsal, agree on the release and the next entrance as well as the hold. In a sequenced arrangement, the pause may need explicit tempo or timing edits.

Example

Hold a final chord and release together.
